The penny stock of ORYN ended the day flat at $0.800. ORYN shares have gained more than 9% in the last five trading sessions.

Earlier this week, ORYN had announced that it has been selected to provide custom designed corporate apparel as part of a recent marketing initiative for a major U.S. aerospace manufacturer.

ORYN said that with the help of noted Dallas-based distributor Bob Lilly Professional Promotions, the company showcased the eye-catching appeal and marketability of Elastolite’s® ability to improve corporate branded products at Heli Expo 2012. The company said that its Elastolite product was enthusiastically well received and it believes that this will lead to subsequent opportunities at similar events.

Earlier this week, ORYN also announced that plans for mass production have reached a key phase with the departure of senior team members to China this week.

CEO Tom Schaeffer said that ORYN’s aim is to ensure a seamless transition to large scale production and the ability to reach quickly to any operational needs as they occur. Schaeffer further said that the company has invested considerable effort in preparing for this opportunity and its commitment is reflected in its desire to integrate smoothly with manufacturers.

The small-cap stock of CCRT ended the day 28.83% lower at $4.37. The stock touched an intra-day low of $4.19 in Thursday’s trading session.

CCRT shares plunged after the company announced preliminary results of its cash tender offer to purchase up to 8,250,000 shares of its common stock, no par value per share, at a purchase price of $10 per share. The tender offer expired at 11.59 PM, EST on September 12, 2012.

CCRT said that as of expiration date, 23,229,491 shares of common stock were validly tendered and not withdrawn in the tender offer, which includes 3,213,680 shares tendered through notice of guaranteed delivery. Based on this, CCRT expects to accept for payment 8,250,000 shares of common stock at a purchase price of $10 per share, for a total cost of around $82.5 million.

The tender offer was announced by the company last month.

Last month, CCRT also announced the sale of its charged-off debt buying operations, Jefferson Capital to Flexpoint Fund II L.P. for $130.5 million, of which $10.8 million will be received by CCRT if certain performance targets are met by December 31, 2014.

David G. Hanna, Chairman and CEO of CompuCredit, said last month that he is very pleased with the terms of agreement as it provides the company a very favorable return on its Jefferson Capital investment as well as capital that can be used for expansion of CCRT’s point-of-sale retail customer lending platform, auto lending platform and other businesses with long-term growth potential that provide attractive returns. Hanna added that CCRT is actively exploring other uses of the capital generated by the sale, including stock buybacks and dividends.

At last check, EQIX shares were trading 8.72% higher at $202.81, with volume up from daily average of 750,154 to 4.89 million. The stock hit a 52-week high of $212 in today’s trading.

EQIX shares are gaining in today’s trading after the company’s Board approved a plan to pursue conversion to a real estate investment trust (REIT). The Board reached the decision following thorough analysis of various structures designed to maximize long-term value for shareholders.

Steve Smith, CEO of Equinix, said that as a REIT, the company will be able to provide its shareholders with regular distributions from earnings. Smith said that while operating as a REIT, the company will continue to fully execute its global growth strategy of expanding in markets where demand and financial return warrant.

Shares of McEwen Mining Inc. (NYSE: MUX), a mining company engaged in the exploration for and production of precious metals in the U.S., Mexico and Argentina, are soaring in today’s trading.

At last check, MUX shares were trading 8.18% higher at $4.63, with volume up from daily average of 1.92 million to 2.93 million. The stock touched a 52-week high of $4.65 in today’s trading.

Year-to-date, MUX shares have gained more than 34%, outperforming the S&P 500. The stock has a 52-week high of $6.30.

Shares of Firstmerit Corp. (NASDAQ: FMER), a bank holding company, are sinking in today’s trading.

At last check, FMER shares were trading 10.20% lower at $15.41, with volume up from daily average 816,879 to 6.98 million. The stock fell to an intra-day low of $15.03 in today’s trading.

FMER shares are falling even as the company announced that it would acquire Citizens Republic Bancorp (NASDAQ: CRBC) in an all-stock deal valued at approximately $952 million. The acquisition will allow FMER to expand its footprint in Michigan and Wisconsin.

Under the terms of the agreement, CRBC shareholders will receive 1.37 FMER shares for each share they tender to the offering. Based on FMER’s closing price on Wednesday, the offer price represents a premium of 18%.

Paul Greig, CEO of Firstmerit, said that with a five-state reach that will extend from Western Pennsylvania to Wisconsin, FMER looks to become the bank of choice among businesses and individuals across the upper Midwest.

At last check, the small-cap stock of VICL was trading 6.10% higher at $4, with volume up from daily average of 325,148 to 2.98 million. The stock touched an intra-day high of $4.24 in today’s trading. Year-to-date, the stock has fallen 9.75%.

VICL shares are gaining after the company today announced that it granted a worldwide, nonexclusive license to Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE: BMY) of its patented platform DNA immunization technology and its Vaxfectin® adjuvant for use in the production of antibodies.

As per the terms of the agreement, BMY will use VICL’s technology to generate antibodies with potential therapeutic uses in humans. Under the agreement, the company will also provide specific quantities of the Vaxfectin adjuvant to BMY from time to time. VICL did not disclose the financial terms of the agreement with BMY.

Commenting on the agreement, Vijay B. Samant, president and CEO of Vical, said that VICL is pleased to enter into the agreement with BMY. Samant noted that the agreement recognizes an important application of VICL’s DNA immunization technology. He further said that DNA immunization has been used widely in research setting as an efficient means of antibody production and the agreement represents a meaningful step toward monetizing a common use of VICL’s broadly applicable intellectual property asset.

The agreement also establishes a template for additional agreements with others working in the field, according to Samant. He added that VICL’s Vaxfectin adjuvant has shown significant improvement in the efficiency of the immunization process and the company is excited to establish the initial license agreement for Vaxfectin as well.

The stock has been trading so far in the range of $0.25 and $0.2780. It opened today at $0.2520 and at the last check, it was trading at $0.2725, which was a 7.96% increase from its previous day close of $0.2524. FNMA had been between $0.19 and $0.4050 in the previous 52 weeks. The company’s total market cap stood at $1570.02 million and recorded earnings per share of $-1.77.

FNMA had opened today at a price slightly below to the previous day close price but increased quickly to $0.2560 within few minutes of market open. Then it reached steeply to its intraday high of $0.2780 but dropped to $0.2701 by mid half of the day.

It had traded quite heavily so far for the day with the trading volume of 4.84 million compared to its average 5 day volume of 1.92 million shares and its daily average volume of 4.67 million shares.

Fannie Mae along with Freddie Mac had recently announced their guidance towards the program, “Keep Your Home California and Other States Fund”. This program is part of the Obama administration’s Hardest Hit Fund initiative, which uses federal funds from the 2008 Wall Street bailout to help borrowers at risk of foreclosure. It allows the financially stressed borrowers to reduce their mortgage principal amounts by using Taxpayer funds.

Under its Fannie Mae Guaranteed Multifamily Structures (Fannie Mae GeMS) program, it had recently priced its seventh Multifamily DUS REMIC in 2012 totaling $700 million.

Kimberly Johnson, vice president of FNMA Multifamily Capital Markets claimed that FNA 2012-M11 is the first GeMS REMIC backed by floating rate collateral. He also quoted that the Depository Institutions are showing quite a lot of interest and confidence over this deal since all classes of the REMIC are guaranteed by Fannie Mae with respect to the full and timely payment of interest and principal.

As per the latest released quarterly results for the period ending June 2012, the company showed continuous improvement in its financial position; its operating income increased by 277% to $5.2 billion and net income was at $5.1 billion. Its total assets were worth $3195.6 billion including $24.73 billion worth of cash and its equivalents.  Total liabilities were $3192.85 billion, among which over 99% was long term. It also paid its 2nd quarter dividend of $2.9 billion to the Department of Treasury.

PLL shares are soaring in today’s trading after the company reported its fourth-quarter financial results. For the fourth quarter ended July 31, 2012, PLL reported sales of $783.7 million, compared to $780.4 million reported for the same period in the previous year.

The company’s diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $0.73, compared to $0.82 reported for the same period in the previous year.

Larry Kingsley, president and CEO of Pall Corp., said that PLL executed a solid fourth quarter. Kingsley said that PLL focused almost exclusively on restoring customer service levels and has recovered from the ERP implementation challenges in the third quarter of FY12.

Shares of Pier 1 Imports Inc. (NYSE: PIR), a specialty retailer of decorative home furnishings and gifts, are marginally lower in today’s trading.

At last check, PIR shares were trading 0.61% lower at $19.44, with volume at 745,398. The stock touched a 52-week high of $20.30 earlier today before paring its gains.

PIR today reported its financial results for the second quarter ended August 25, 2012. The company’s comparable sales for the quarter rose 6.7%. Gross profit improved 160 basis points to 41.2% in the second quarter. The company reported a 36% in its operating income for the second quarter.

PIR’s earnings per share for the quarter were $0.24 on a GAAP basis and $0.19 on a non-GAAP basis.

Alex W. Smith, president and CEO of Pier 1 Imports, said that the company is pleased to report its 12th consecutive quarter of strong comparable store sales gains and profit growth. Smith said that PIR’s sound strategies and focus on flawless execution ideally positions the company to achieve continued growth and long-term success.

The penny stock of ONCY ended the day 12.06% lower at $2.48. The stock has pared some of its losses in pre-market trading today, gaining 2.42% to $2.54.

Earlier today, ONCY announced preliminary results from its U.S. Phase 2 clinical trials in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung (SCCLC) using intravenous administration of REOLYSIN® in combination with carboplatin and paclitaxel.

REOLYSIN is ONCY’s proprietary formulation of human reovirus.

The primary aim of the Phase 2 trial is to evaluate the antitumor effect of the treatment regimen in the study population in terms of objective response rates. The company said that the primary endpoint of the study was met after 15 evaluable patients were enrolled.

Dr. Brad Thompson, CEO of Oncolytics Biotech, said that the preliminary results are encouraging and further supportive of the decision to conduct a randomized Phase II study REOLYSIN in non-small lung cancer (NSCLC) patients including those with SCCLC. Thompson said that the Oncolytics Phase II program continues to grow and now includes randomized trials in six separate indications.

On Wednesday, ONCY had provided an update on Phase III study of REOLYSIN in head and neck cancers. The company said that the median evolving progression free survival for 80 patients enrolled in the first stage of the study was greater than expected as was the best response rate. Further evaluation showed that patients for whom only metastatic disease was being measured by clinicians, were responding differently to the treatment than patients who had local regional head and neck disease.

Based on the differential PFS, ONCY has identified two distinct patients groups are being enrolled in the clinical study and therefore the two groups of patients must be considered to be different for the purpose of both analysis and investigation.

ONCY’s CEO said that segregating and separately evaluating the two identified patient groups means, the company will be able to obtain its first randomized data in the two patient populations, including one with only metastatic disease.

The penny stock of ACTC ended the day 7.55% lower at $0.0845. Despite the sharp decline in Wednesday’s trading session, ACTC has gained 5.23% in the last five trading sessions.

ACTC CEO Gary Rabin recently presented at the 14th Annual Rodman & Renshaw Global Investment Conference. As one of the few companies engaged in embryonic stem cell research, ACTC has generated significant interest among investors. However, the field of stem cell research remains controversial.

Recently, ACTC commented on U.S. Appeals’ Court’s dismissal ruling in case challenging federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. ACTC CEO Rabin said that the court ruling should be of considerable benefit to the company and its embryonic stem cell-based clinical programs. Rabin said that the ruling effectively removes major speed bumps for the National Institutes of Health in terms of approving the several stem cell lines that ACTC has submitted for their consideration for funding.

Rabin also said that the ruling removes a great deal of ambiguity that has hampered legislative attempts to provide an efficient mechanism for federal funding of hESC research. He added that the path for legislators to enact such legislation has now been cleared and in that case ACTC is optimistic that there could be encouraging new developments in the legislative arena, as well, in coming months.

Despite the controversies surrounding stem cell research, ACTC has made significant progress in its clinical trials. During the second quarter of 2012, ACTC added Massachusetts Eye and Ear as additional site for Clinical Trial for Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration using embryonic stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. ACTC also received Data Safety Monitoring Board’s approval to increase RPE dosage for Stargardt’s Disease patients in U.S. trial.
